Fitting a Backpack
Once you have chosen a backpack of the right size, design, and features for your trip, you will have to make sure that it's a comfortable fit. You will need someone's help, but here are a few tips for ensuring your new pack sits comfortably on your back.

First measure your back. The pack you choose should be based on the length of your torso. Fitting a Backpack1 Measure from prominent vertebrae at base of neck
Measure to the top of hip bones
Make sure the pack is a comfortable fit, allowing for any extra layers of clothing. Fitting a Backpack2 Shoulder straps should be snug but arms should still move freely

Packing a Backpack
Always pack in reverse order: the items you need first should go in last. Heavy items should be placed close to your back to prevent the pack pulling away from your shoulders.

  1. Keep raingear at the top of the pack
  2. Use a cloth bag to hold personal items
  3. Store daily essentials in outside pocket
  4. Carry your water bottle in a upright and accessible position
  5. Use the lower compartment for sleeping bag and mat
  6. Secure extra water on outside of pack
  7. Strap tent to the bottom of the pack
