Good to remember...first time in the mountains

Some people say that survival item number one is tent. I would say it's head. What I saw on TV on news, and from meeting with people on trails, I reached the following conclusion: accidents occur most often because of the attitude the tourists have about the route. Regardless of the reason that it bears them on the mountain paths, I notice that they does not take even the smallest safety measures. This is why they (the lucky ones) are pick by the rescue team like blueberries. Maybe they do not know what! I noticed that the pleasure of going on the mountain is learned "from father to son", on mountain routes. Unfortunately on mountain, the police, firefighters and rescue appear after an event happens, like in cities. So you will get hurt first, and then learn the lesson.

This thing has to change.

Most problems occur on the route, due to bad organizing. When I refer to the organization, I mean a "logistics" of any route, doesn't matter how easy it is. Logically, everyone has an idea in their head about the route - where you go, how many days and others - but some things escape our attention, unfortunately some are very important.

1.    Route Preparation

After we decided where and how long we go:
- someone from home must to know all the proposed itinerary
Reason: if something happens, we have someone to announce the rescue team if they suspects something bad happened, especially if we don't get accommodation somewhere.
- health check: we may suffer from something that aggravates on the effort. Especially on long routes.
- verification of minimum equipment required: boots, clothes exchange, flashlight (if possible headlight), raincoat, medical kit, thicker clothes for cold weather.

Mountain Equipment is generally the same, ranging from one season to another. For taller mountains would be better not miss gloves and hat.

- you'd better not go into a longer trip without a little heat output.
- last but not least: get more information about the area and route determined: maps, articles, descriptions, route reports (journals) from the site or from other reliable sources. So we make a generalized picture about the route.
- establishment of the food rations we have to get 2 days extra in case you'll be stuck somewhere. Also because we are not accommodated with that effort and with the conditions of mountain, we will eat more than usual.

2)    The Route

Before starting the route you must have in mind the following:
- careful check the time you will make on route and set the starting time depending on that time. Usually you'd better get to your destination with 1 hour before dark.
Reason: not know the route, avoid the error of the night, we still have time to prepare something for the night. Departure time is very important; usually it goes in the morning because we have time to make a big part of the route on favorable time. We have to take a safety margin, for a 6 hours route we have to allocate like 8-8,5 hours from that day. The reason would be: we don't know the route and how the body reacts to the effort. It may appear very small problems that hinder us: small accidents, poor state of the route, lack of marking, rain, fatigue and lengthening halt, dogs of the sheepfold ... This information is obtained from the first cabin, from tourists, from locals, information that is really needed and we have to get used to ask them.

- we must have a "rescue route" For the proposed route, you really need to know everything about it: from where we go, where we will go, time spent on it, the intersection with other routes. With this basic information we know how to get to a safe shelter in case of some trouble.

If we have chalet accommodation:

- announce someone from the chalet about the proposed route, time of departure and estimated arrival time
Reason: if something happens (accident, loss of route, etc.), we have someone to announce the rescue team if they suspects something bad happened,
- follow the instructions received
- deviation from the route set is a mistake. Whatever the reason you should not deviate from the established route. If you still do it, announces at departure someone "I will walk in there and possibly the other way."
Reason: in case something happens, no one will find you if someone is looking for you. You said something, they will look for you there, but you're somewhere else entirely. Have in mind that often you will have phone signal problems or don't have battery.
- pay attention to the route. There are always landmarks by which you can guide a possible rescue team if need be.
- where is the narrow path you must be careful not to look elsewhere while walking. When you are not careful you can end up with a stretch, dislocation or who knows what broken bone after a fall. If you want to watch to the landscape, stop, look and then start again.
- on the return route tell someone the group's arrival.
Reason: common sense. Besides, for various reasons, like someone can overlook your arrival and can alert the rescue team for nothing. When you arrive you must tell everything, especially unpleasant events. After a sleep of 2 hours (well deserved), you will remember that you passed someone with a broken leg that you could not help it but you promised that you announce someone to the chalet. The man can stand in the cold rain at 3-5 degrees outside. Unfortunately these things have happened. Worse, if the person is from your group
- if possible respect the chalet rules.

3)    Going home

- leaving home should be in the day proposed. If delayed for some reason, try to announce.
- take care to leave on time to not rush your steps beyond measure.
Reason: risk of accidents on the road

                Other

- if above the ridge / plateau weather is bad, do not try to climb on foot
- if you see an indicator that have a specified time until the next point on the route, multiply this time by 3
- routes are calculated in hours: about 300-350 m level difference per hour
- when you climb, the key is the effort, in slope, this factor is attention
- dropped from the beginning to walk unaccompanied on routes which are usually difficult. It is very likely to remain blocked
- if you don't know the route, do not diverted from who knows what reason, you risk the possibility to stay in route and cant to climb or descend. It's quite possible that you can not do it without special equipment that you don't have it.
- climbing on a slope may seem tempting. Once you're at a certain height from the route you realize the stupidity you made. Although it seemed easy to climb, when you have to comes down you realize that the laws of gravity work for you to. Rule valid for paths, especially if they are wet and you do not have proper shoes.
- other more sophisticated things, like climbing, on summer or winter, learn in special classes and uses other equipment. You should be concerned if desired route not "require" the use of such equipment.
- knowledge of international emergency signal

                The End

A tourist enemy is panic. To maintain our calm, to judge any situation in silence, to weigh all the possibilities for it to choose the best and most appropriate in that moment, is a high quality for tourist. This quality form and educate
Mountain hike register victims especially because of our own ambitions, ignorant and imprudent; accidents in the mountains have never other cases, the mountain is our friend if you know how to walk and especially if we can.
