INTERNATIONAL CODE signaling in case of emergency on mountain
INTERNATIONAL CODE signaling in case of emergency on mountain

In case of danger, the announcement "ask help" is made by light, visual or sound signals. International Code of alarm in the mountains was adopted in 1937 at the Paris Congress of UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme).

Call for help: International Code of Signaling
- 6 signals / minute every 10 seconds between them
The answer "received signal":
- 3 signals / minute, that is a signal of 2-3 sec every 20 sec

Between two sets of signals. is a break of 1-2 minutes each.

Light signals:

  • At night you can do with: flashlight, lantern, with a blanket cover-discovery of a fire or other light sources
  • Day can be done with: mirror which reflected sunlight, smoke or illuminating rockets, etc..

Visual signals - help signal, allowed to see all the time (not flashing!) can be:

  • Raising red pennant near shelters or use at the accident place a colored area preferably red or orange-gold (the colored foil survival) fixed to the rock
  • Waving hand with a colored objects: shirts, sweatshirt, etc.
  • Lifting arms in "Y" overhead.

Acoustic signals: shouts, whistles, (made of mouth or whistle, just one improvised) by striking a metal object (ice ax, tent poles, kettle, canteen, canteen, cylinder stove, spoons, etc..)

MODERN:

In recent years, many lives in accidents on the mountain have been saved thanks to mobile phones. If we are witness to an mountain accident and have a cell phone, we can call to the rescue dispatch. You can call the mountain rescue in case you are lost, and request information about the area, information which allow us to manage our own without an alarm called.

In case of accidents in the mountains (and not only!), easier and safer announcement is made by the international emergency number: 112. The call is free. The number works even if your mobile phone has no SIM card in it, you do not have credit, or keypad is locked. But does not work if your the battery is empty or no GSM signal. And unfortunately there are many areas in the mountains where we have no GSM signal. Especially in those areas we must be cautious, to avoid an accident.

Announcement must contain:

  • name and surname of the person who gives the alarm.
  • name and surname of the person injured - if we know
  • nature and seriousness of the accident (slip-fall on steep slopes, avalanche, fractures, bleeding, consciously or not, etc.)
  • number of victims
  • place
  • time when the accident occurred
  • first aid measures already granted or pending grant, what and by who
  • weather conditions: wind, visibility ...

But: The most effective is .... do not become victim of an accident mountain! Do not approach a mountain without prior training and documentation, without the knowledge and without proper equipment and practical experience at least one of the group.

The Mountain not tolerate ignorance, unconscious and imprudence. Do not become victims of the mountain.
